Mole Traps

If you are like most homeowners with a large amount of land and property you have trouble with moles. There are many different ways to control these pests from home remedies, mole poison, chewing gum, but the most effective and simplest method of mole containment is common mole traps. If left free to roam a family of moles can destroy your entire front lawn in a matter of weeks. The most common way of determining whether or not you have a mole infestation is the dug up dirt piles you will see around your yard. Moles travel underground and are nocturnal, so if you are wondering why every morning you wake up with more and more mole hills on your yard you can thank their behavioral habits for that.

Since moles are nocturnal they operate during the night while resting during the day. This can be a problem for those people who work during the day, because the last thing you want to do after a long day of work is stand outside on your front lawn with a flashlight and a shotgun hoping to get a glimpse of the mole. This is where mole traps come into play. A mole trap is very similar in design to the common mousetrap in that there as a snap function after the trap has been pulled. Like with rats, moles have a common reoccurring pattern in their travels. With rats you set the traps close to the wall because of the behavioral pattern of only traveling against walls, so setting a trap along the wall will guarantee a capture. Like with rats, moles will pop up out of their freshest dug mole hill to relocate themselves. The best way to find out which hill is the freshest is by the look and feel of the dirt. A fresh mole hill will have newly crumbled up dirt with little to no dirt clods, so once you locate this hill you can cock back the spring and place the trap in the hill.

The best mole trap will be made out of metal and will rest atop of a mole hill ready to snap shut whenever the mole pops it's head out and trips the trap. Where a mole will dig its next hill is a hard to predict pattern, but placing traps within a five foot radius of the latest dug hill will most likely result in trapping moles. If you are setting multiple traps on all hills, and in the surrounding areas but are still coming up with no pest you can consider placing some mole bait outside of the traps to lure it into the area. Their diets consist of grubs and small worms, so expect to find mock worms as bait for your traps.

Overall if you are faced with an infestation and are not wanting to use poisons or not trusting of homemade concoctions take a look at what mole traps can do to eradicate your unwanted yard pest.

Moles very seldom come above ground so your best method of trapping is to set traps inside of their feed tunnels. usually the mound you see in your yard is due to him building underground for a nesting site or tunneling for a food souce so trapping above ground is just a waste of time..
