Keeping Shower Doors Clean
76Having a dirty shower can really make your bathroom look dingy. Getting your shower doors clean can be quite a chore, especially if they are caked with soap scum and water stains. You can go out and buy expensive cleaners to try to get them looking brand new, but there are a few ways to wash them without having to break the bank. Vinegar is one of the greatest things for cleaning any surface. It might smell bad, but it’s great and cleaning off those stubborn stains from your glass shower doors.
If you rinse thoroughly after using vinegar and open some windows to let it air out, the smell will go away in a couple hours. To make your own vinegar based cleaner simply mix one part of water to one part of vinegar and add them to a spray bottle or other container for easy use. Spray this homemade cleaner on the glass shower door and scrub with a sponge. Rinse of your vinegar mixture just like you would with any cleaner you get at the store. This is one of the best ways to fight those stubborn shower stains.
If for some reason the vinegar solution didn’t work for you try using baby oil. Use a sponge to apply to oil to your door and scrub thoroughly. To remove the oil you can either use glass cleaner or the homemade vinegar solution that I described before. Make sure to remove all the baby oil to avoid an oily mess. Rinse off the cleaner to reveal your new clean doors. Not only will the doors be cleaner, but the oil gives the glass a protective coating that can help prevent water stains in the future.
Another homemade cleaner that will help get those doors squeaky clean is actually made from either dish soap or fabric softener. Mix one cup of dish soap or liquid fabric softener with one quart of water. Get a sponge and scrub the soap scum and difficult stains. It might seem counterproductive to clean soap with soap, but you should see a noticeable difference. Make sure to rinse your mixture off the shower door parts completely so it doesn’t harden and become a stain itself.
To prevent stains from coming back try cleaning your shower at least once a month. Every time you get out of the shower wipe it down with a towel to help prevent buildup. Lemon oil can also help prevent soap scum from building up. Just apply it after you’re done cleaning your shower. The soap you use can also cause you to get more stubborn stains and buildup. Liquid and glycerin soaps leave less buildup than other types of soap. If you work on preventing buildup you can avoid having to deal with a big mess later that takes hours to clean.
Shower doors can get pretty ugly, especially if you don’t have time in your schedule to clean them regularly. There are easy homemade cleaners that you can use to help get those doors clean without having to make a trip to the store. Preventing buildup is one way you can help avoid this problem in the future. If you’re still having problems getting the stains off you can try buying cleaners, but it may well be that those stains are there for good.
