So, what is the difference between interior window shutters and exterior shutters? If this is something you have never thought about, if you are a new homeowner and you are looking for shutters as window coverings, this is something to think about. If anyone drives around their town, or surrounding towns, they will probably see homes that have exterior shutters. These are shutters which give windows a completed look to them. These types of shutters have been used for over a century in America and Europe. These also work as eye candy for passerbies, friends and family. These coverings will provide protection to windows, from the outside. If a homeowner is selling their home and their windows can be seen from the curb or sidewalk this will affect the aesthetic value of the home. Interior shutters, on the other hand, are more for light penetration into rooms. They will add a nice and cozy feeling to any type of interior designs in the room and are preferred for their looks. It is a high value that people feel comfortable and warm in their homes, which shutters can make a big difference.

That is the difference between interior shutters and exterior shutters in a nutshell. Now, when a homeowner decides to look at and purchase shutters for the inside of their home, they will have many options to look at and decide upon. Shutters can be purchased with 1”, 2” or even 3” slats. The 2” or 3” slats are usually seen on homes by the beach or lake. They can also be purchased, of course, for a home inland. The style and color of shutters all depends on what home décor a homeowner is seeking. The colors of shutters can be the traditional white or any color that matches the paint in their room, color of their carpet or bedding.

You can choose between custom interior shutters or discount interior shutters. If a homeowner is on a budget, but still wants shutters for their windows, budget friendly are the way to go. Budget friendly shutters can be made in the traditional, plantation or cap cod way. These shutters range in price from as low as $150 to as high as $170. These prices can change depending on how many feet you need or the thickness of the slats. Some slats for the traditional shutters can be 1” to 1 ¼” thick. If a homeowner wants the cap cod style shutters, those can be purchased with 1 3/4” thick slats. One of the most popular styles is the interior plantation shutters. These are the shutters seen in a lot of movies where there is a beach scene. These shutters have those 2” to 2 ½” thick slats. Although plantation shutters are lovely, they do have to be taken better care of than traditional or cap cod shutters.

Finally, the best thing about the different designs is that they come in more than one material. Depending on where a homeowner lives, they might want a material that does not warp or break down easily. If a homeowner lives in a humid or real dry area, they will want to purchase plastic or vinyl instead of the traditional interior wood shutter material. The only way a homeowner or their guests can tell the difference in the material is if they touch them or close them. These shutters are also available in faux wood as well. Another great feature about these shutters is they allow the homeowner to move open or close them with their center slits. These slits allow for more or less light to enter a room. If the sun is going down in a room, the homeowner might want to raise the slit up so the slats will be facing upwards, catching the light. If the sun is rising, and not in the homeowners eyes, they might want the slits centered or facing down, in a semi closed position. These slits also protect young children from being seriously injured. Now you will be able to make an informed decision about new window covering purchase for your home.
